Lyons to Muir Dawson, dated November 28, 1961. Envelopes toned, with shelf wear, tears at extremities of the envelopes, contents in Fine condition. T. J. Lyons was an important collector of nineteenth-century American type faces, both metal and wood. Lyons intended to use these type faces, but he was also conscious of the danger to the types that their use would entail, so Lyons would produce rubber printing surfaces from the original types, which he used to print a variety of materials. The two envelopes offered here contain one of Lyons' printing samples from 1959, and 18 more through late 1961. Lyons used the types in many creative and often humorous pieces. In the typed letter included in this lot, Lyons explains to Muir Dawson his use of the rubber printing technique, how he goes about creating new work, and thanks Dawson for sending wood type catalogues produced by Dawson's Book Shop, and remarks about what Lyons learned from studying these catalogues.
