Alfred Johnson made major contributions towards the dating and attribution of early printed books from their typography which led Johnson to a wider interest in typefaces and design. Alfred F. Johnson was an English academic librarian, bibliographer, curator, and expert in typography. He was Deputy Keeper of Printed Books at the British Museum. He was the author of many bibliographical reference works, and the standard Encyclopaedia of Typefaces. PROVENANCE: Sir Robert Arundell Hudson (1864-1927) was assistant and later secretary of the National Liberal Federation. After the Liberal victory in 1906, Hudson was knighted. He worked for the Red Cross during the Great War. He resigned from politics and died in London in 1927, and is buried in the West Cloister of Westminster Abbey.
